I have been very impressed with how so many burrito restaurants are now serving vegan/vegetarian meat options. Chipotle has their vegan Sofritas (tofu and spicy), Moe’s has a grilled tofu option, and now finally Freebird’s World Burrito’s has come around and joined the rest of them with their new vegan Tempeh Calabacitas!
I was super excited when I found out that I can have a real vegetarian meat option at most burrito chains out there, and not have to resort to their “veggie” option (which is most likely just grilled mixed vegetables). Let’s hope this vegetarian movement keeps going and progresses to other chain restaurants.
Freebird’s World Burrito’s is an alternative burrito chain that always has fresh ingredients. They have a lot of special ingredients such as roasted garlic, cilantro, and tomatoes. The whole vibe of the restaurant is fun because they have great Rock music blasting, and graffiti on the walls. It is also fun to see all of the tinfoil art on the walls, used from the tinfoil that they wrap around their burritos.
I like to order the nacho meal, which is like a burrito bowl, but with chips at the bottom. They like to pile the toppings sky high, and give you a large portion. I always feel like I get my money’s worth, because of how large the meal ends up being. On top of my chips, I had queso, black beans, Mexican rice, corn salsa, tomatoes, black olives, and the vegan Tempeh Calabacitas (as my meat). The flavor combination is always just right, and you can customize each item that you order.
The Tempeh Calabacitas are large square pieces of tempeh that is mixed with braised vegetables and Mexican spices. I could taste the large squash pieces in the vegetable mixture. I enjoyed the taste pairing of the tempeh Calabacitas and the rest of my nacho ingredients. It felt like the tempeh was meant to be there all along, not like a foreign ingredient that they concocted to please the vegans. They put a lot of thought into the the their new vegan meat option, and it paid off.
My husband had 3 steak tacos with chips and salsa. He always orders the tacos and says that are very good. The roasted garlic is also another one of his favorite ingredients.
The Freebird’s World Burrito location that I visited is 5000 Belt Line Rd, Dallas, TX 75254.
